The original parish church was demolished under the authority of an Act of Parliament in 1774 and the new Holy Trinity parish church was opened in 1776 on the edge of Clapham Common. The old church was demolished and a new chapel - St Paul - was built adjacent to the site. At first a daughter church to Holy Trinity it became a ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England in 1861

The graveyard around St. Paul's was surveyed by Alfred Bax ca 1879. The Inscriptions have been transcribed and added to the Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index, There are 3,330 names from this churchyard in the Surrey MI Index. The graveyard served both the former Holy Trinity Church and the new St. Paul's church.

A number of new parishes were created from the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Clapham Holy Trinity Clapham Park St Stephen was formerly part of Streatham St. Mary (sometimes known as Balham St. Mary). It became a separate parish in 1905.

The church is in the Church of England Diocese of Southwark. The Southwark Diocesan Record Office, where you should find any surviving parish registers for this church, is the London Metropolitan Archives.


Clapham is in the London Borough of Lambeth.
