After housing development by the former London County Council , St John the Evangelist on the Sheerwater estate was opened in 1961 as a Chapel of EaseA daughter church within an ecclesiastical Parish, or a chapel in an outlying area of the parish that is more convenient for parishioners to attend in the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England
of West Byfleet, Our Lady Help of Christians. It closed at the end of 1995.
St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic church was located in the Anglican Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Woodham All Saints. Brookwood Cemetery is around seven miles away and has been open since 1854; Woking Crematorium about five miles distant, and the graveyard of the Roman Catholic church of Sutton Place St. Edward the confessor is just over six miles away. Sheerwater is in the Woking district of Surrey.
