He died intestate in 2006 and in 2011 the High Court awarded ownership to his partner Diane Halliday. Opened 1854. 440 acres. 4 chapels, office and lodge. Sections for Catholics, Bakers, Foresters, Oddfellows, 7 Muslim sects, Swedish church, Latvian church, Orthodox church, L&SW Railway, S Railway, Corps of Commissionaires, London parishes and churches, several religious orders. 1855 first land sale. By 1864 only 343 acres sold for £31,000 (to War Office). 1869 Act removed all restrictions on land sale – from this point land sales took prominence. 1906 vacates 2 Lancaster Place, Strand. 1917 first military burials. 1921 IWGC formally opens area. 1925 Ltd Company formed. 1936 first sale of shares to public. A series of public and private owners through to the 1980s when Administrators took over. AIR 2/12609 re RAF ground, includes cemetery pictures. WO 32/18171 & 2 re CWGC plus other plans of cemetery. WO 32/18578 & 9 re Moslem areas and Horsell common ground. 225/295 re Chelsea pensioners plot maintenance 1954. Two Friends Groups. Visited over a 15 year period. Burials of note are too numerous to include here – see SHC Z/436 for extensive details. All of the references above are to records held by Surrey History Centre. NOTE: in Dec 2014 Woking Borough Council acquired the shares in the two companies that owned Brookwood cemetery. Brookwood is a village in the Woking district of Surrey.
