Following development of the housing estates, St. Thomas More church in Byfleet was opened in 1973 as a Chapel of EaseA daughter church within an ecclesiastical Parish, or a chapel in an outlying area of the parish that is more convenient for parishioners to attend in the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England of West Byfleet, Our Lady Help of Christians. It closed in 2006.


St. Thomas More church was located in the Anglican Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Byfleet, St. Mary the Virgin.

Early burials may have taken place in the Anglican parish church. However Brookwood Cemetery is just over nine miles away and has been open since 1854; Woking Crematorium about seven miles distant, and the graveyard of the Roman Catholic church of Sutton Place St. Edward the confessor is just over eight miles away.


West Surrey Family History Society CD3 (The Woking Collection - Revised & Enhanced 3rd edition 2004) has baptismal records for Byfleet St. Mary from 1698 to 1840; and Burial records from 1728 to 1865.

WSFHS CD10 (The Surrey Burial Index - 2nd edition 2009) has burial records for Byfleet St. Mary from 1728 to 1865.

WSFHS CD 15(Surrey Baptisms Not in the IGI) has baptismal records for Byfleet St. Mary from 1698 to 1875.

WSFHS CD 26 Parish Register Transcipts and Indexes in the Chertsey District - January 2012) has baptismal records for Byfleet St. Mary from 1698 to 1840; and burial records from 1728 to 1865.

Byfleet is in the Woking district of Surrey.
