It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England were created from the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Battersea St Mary: Battersea St George (1831), Penge St. John (1851) Battersea Christ Church (1861), Battersea St John (1863), Battersea St Philip (1871), Wandsworth Common St Michael (1883), Battersea Rise St Mark (1883), Battersea Park All Saints (1884), Battersea St Stephen (1887), Battersea St Luke (1900), Battersea St Mary le Park (1935). Until the London Government Act 1899 came into force Penge was part of Battersea St Mary's Parish. The churches were: Christ Church Penge, Holy Trinity Penge, St John Penge and St Paul Penge The church is in the Church of England Diocese of Southwark. The Southwark Diocesan Record Office, where you should find any surviving parish registers for this church, is the London Metropolitan Archives.
