There is anecdotal evidence that the author Daniel Defoe was associated with the early days of this chapel, however the chapel dates from ca. 1765 some thirty years after his death. Over time the building seems to have been used as an Independent or Congregational chapel, a Presbyterian chapel and a Primitive Methodist chapel. The chapel and its disused graveyard seems to have been sold for commercial use around 1910. It has variously been used as a shoe shop and a "Superdrug"



There are 55 names from the Defoe Chapel in the Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index.. They are taken from Alfred Bax's survey of the graveyard in September 1886. Our thanks to Surrey Archaeological Society for allowing us to copy material from their archives

The Defoe Chapel is located in the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Tooting St Nicholas.


WSFHS CD18 (Metropolitan Surrey Burials Index (including some Rural Parishes) has burial records for: WSFHS CD29(A 2nd Collection of Metropolitan Surrey Burials (including some Rural Parishes) has burial records for Tooting Graveney St. Nicholas from 1841-1866.

WSFHS CD39(A 3rd Collection of Surrey Baptisms) has christening records for Tooting Graveney St. Nicholas from 1845 to 1875

Tooting Graveney, also known as Lower Tooting, is a locality in the London Borough of Wandsworth
