There is anecdotal evidence that the author Daniel Defoe was associated with the early days of this chapel, however the chapel dates from ca. 1765 some thirty years after his death. Over time the building seems to have been used as an Independent or Congregational chapel, a Presbyterian chapel and a Primitive Methodist chapel. The chapel and its disused graveyard seems to have been sold for commercial use around 1910. It has variously been used as a shoe shop and a "Superdrug"
There are 55 names from the Defoe Chapel in the Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index.. They are taken from Alfred Bax's survey of the graveyard in September 1886. Our thanks to Surrey Archaeological Society for allowing us to copy material from their archives
