Christchurch was originally part of the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Stoke next Guildford it became a separate ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England in 1936.

The Monumental Inscriptions for Stoke St. John were noted for the Society in 1977. We also have copies of Alfred Bax's survey of 1903 (taken on a "warm and sunny day") and an undated manuscript ca 1911 from the Pardoe Collection. Our thanks to Surrey Archaeological Society for allowing us to copy material from their archives

The Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Library includes some 991 names for Stoke St. John which date from the mid 1700s to the mid 1900s.

West Surrey Family History Society CD8 The Guildford Collection has baptismal records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1840, marriages from 1662 to 1837 and burials from 1662 to 1865.

WSFHS CD10 (The Surrey Burial Index - 2nd edition 2009) has burial records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1865.

WSFHS CD30 (Ancient Parishes in the Guildford District) has baptismal records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1840 and burials from 1662 to 1865.

The church is in the Anglican Diocese of Guildford. The Guildford Diocesan Record Office, where you should find any surviving registers for this parish, is the Surrey History Centre.


Christchurch is in the town of Guildford in the wider Guildford district of Surrey.
