This ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England of Westborough St. Francis was created in 1958 from parts of the Ancient Parishesan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Stoke-next-Guildford and Worplesdon and Guildford St. Nicolas.

St Francis was originally built in 1933 as a chapel of ease to Stoughton Emmanuel which had itself formerly been part of the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Stoke-next-Guildford. A second church, St. Clare, Park Barn was built as a Chapel of EaseA daughter church within an ecclesiastical Parish, or a chapel in an outlying area of the parish that is more convenient for parishioners to attend in 1965.


There is no graveyard at St Francis.

The Monumental Inscriptions for Stoke St. John were noted for the Society in 1977. We also have copies of Alfred Bax's survey of 1903 (taken on a "warm and sunny day") and an undated manuscript ca 1911 from the Pardoe Collection. The Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Library includes some 991 names for Stoke St John which date from the mid 1700s to the mid 1900s.

West Surrey Family History Society CD8 The Guildford Collection has baptismal records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1840, marriages from 1662 to 1837 and burials from 1662 to 1865.

Worplesdon St. Mary

West Surrey Family History Society CD2 (Surrey Marriage Index to 1837) has marriage records for Worplesdon St. Mary from 1570 to 1837.

WSFHS CD8 (The Guildford Collection) has baptismal records for Worplesdon St. Mary from 1538 to 1539 and from 1570 to 1840, marriages from 1570 to 1837 and burials from 1570 to 1865.

WSFHS CD15 (Surrey Baptisms Not in the IGI) has baptismal records for Worplesdon St. Mary from 1538 to 1539, from 1570 to 1776 and from 1833 to 1840.

The church is in the Anglican Diocese of Guildford. The Guildford Diocesan Record Office, where you should find any surviving registers for this parish, is the Surrey History Centre.


Westborough is a locality in the Guildford district of Surrey.
