Putney was originally a ChapelryA Chapel of Ease within an Anglican Parish, or a chapel in an outlying area of the parish that is more convenient for parishioners to attend in the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Wimbledon. It became a parish in its own right in the 17th Century. It now forms part of the Putney Team Ministry along with Putney All Saints.

WSFHS has around 230 names from Monumental Inscription at St Mary Putney. We also hold a copy of Cockayne’s brief survey ca 1890 which is not yet transcribed.

It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England :


West Surrey Family History Society CD18(Metropolitan Surrey Burials Index) has burial records for Putney St. Mary from 1620 to 1686 and from 1700 to 1850.

WSFHS CD29(A 2nd Collection of Metropolitan Surrey Burials Index) has burial records for Putney St. Mary from 1841 to 1866.

The church is in the Church of England Diocese of Southwark. The Southwark Diocesan Record Office, where you should find any surviving parish registers for this church, is the London Metropolitan Archives.
