Christ Church was originally built in 1862/63 as a chapel of ease for the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Wonersh St. John. It became a separate ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England in 1881. The Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index has information on three war graves in Shamley Green Churchyard. However there are around 420 names for Wonersh in the Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index

West Surrey Family History Society CD10(Surrey Burial Index) has burial records for Wonersh St John the Baptist from 1539-1865;

WSFHS Surrey Baptisms Not in the IGI - 2nd edition 2009: has baptismal records for Wonersh St John the Baptist from 1539-1802;

WSFHS CD33 (Ancient Parishes in the Hambledon district) has baptismal records for Wonersh St John the Baptist from 1539-1841; Marriages from 1539-1837; and Burials from 1539-1841 .

The church is in the Anglican Diocese of Guildford. The Guildford Diocesan Record Office, where you should find any surviving registers for this parish, is the Surrey History Centre.


Shamley Green is a village in the (civil) parisha Civil Parish is the bottom most tier of local government in England Sometimes called Town Councils in urban areas

of Wonersh in the Waverley district of Surrey.
