Historical notes on English Catholic missions, Kelly, Bernard W. (Rev), 1907:
The locality, formerly known as Foxhall (see Addison's 'Spectator'), is said to derive its name from Guy Faux, the conspirator, who, as tradition asserts, owned an estate here. A Catholic school was opened in the district in 1864. The premises are now a shop close to the Wesleyan school. Miss Troy was the mistress. In July 1866 a school for girls and infants was started by the Notre Dame nuns. Another for boys in Vauxhall Walk followed in January 1872, Mr. W. Troy being appointed headmaster.

Through the initiative of Bishop Butt, Mass was said in the boys' school on Sundays, starting with Sunday, November 28, 1886. In 1891 a property in Upper Kennington Lane and Harleyford Road was acquired by the diocese and next year (January 1892) Fr. W. F. Brown and Fr. D. Moloney were placed in charge of the now independent mission. In February 1898 the new schools, for 625 children, were opened, at a cost of £4,000. The debt was paid off in 1899 owing to a legacy having been left the diocese by Miss Emily King, of Norwood, 'for certain purposes.'

The first stone of the present fine Gothic church was laid by Bishop Bourne, of Southwark, November 8, 1900, and the nave was opened for worship January 31, 1903. The sanctuary and high altar were completed at Easter the same year. Mr. F. A. Walters was the architect. A handsome stone and marble altar was presented by Mr. W.J. Sandford, and a stone font by Mr. E. P. O'Reilly, of Cape Town, in memory of his late wife, a former organist at the school chapel. Mgr. W. F. Brown, V.G., is the first and present rector of the mission.

There is no graveyard at St Anne's Church. We know of only three Roman Catholic cemeteries in the London area, St. Mary's in Kensal Green, St. Patrick's in Leytonstone, and St. Mary Magdalene in Mortlake.

Many local cemeteries may have Roman Catholic sections see https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/bereavement-services/our-cemeteries-crematoria

The Roman Catholic church of St. Anne is located in the Anglican ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England of South Lambeth: St Anne & All Saints, and a about two minute walk from the church of Vauxhall St. Peter.

West Surrey Family History Society CD24(A 2nd Collection of Surrey Baptisms) has burial records for South Lambeth All Saints (under the name Kennington All Saints) from 1874 to 1876.

See our sales page for more information (opens in a new page).

Vauxhall is in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Unless otherwise stated the dates for the creation of parishes are taken from Youngs, Frederick. A. Guide to the Administrative Units of England; Royal Historical Society: London, 1979 volume 1 Southern England.
