The ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England of Penge St. John the Evangelist was created in 1851 from the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Battersea. Penge was originally a detached ChapelryA Chapel of Ease within an Anglican Parish, or a chapel in an outlying area of the parish that is more convenient for parishioners to attend of Battersea and was in Surrey until 1899, when it became an urban district in Kent. It is now part of the London Borough of Bromley

Together with Holy Trinity church, Penge St. John forms the United Parishan united parish is the merger of two or more Church of England parishes to form a single new parish of Holy Trinity with St John Penge in the Church of England Diocese of Rochester.


West Surrey Family History Society has no records for the Penge area. The North West Kent FHS has published register extracts for Penge: St John. See their website for further details


The church is in the Anglican Diocese of Rochester. The parish records are held by Bromley Local Studies Library. You should enquire there for the surviving parish registers. (an new browser window will open -- close it to see this page again)
