St. Matthias, The name of this rising village is derived from that of a mansion in the neighbourhood bestowed by Charles II on the Duchess of Cleveland. The Catholic Church, begun July 1906, was opened for worship [on] Rosary Sunday, October 7, of the same year. The style is Romanesque, the materials used being chiefly red brick with Kentish rag-stone dressings. Accommodation for about sixty-live. The chief feature of the interior is the high altar surmounted by a painted and gilded baldachino. and adorned with a well-painted triptych representing the Assumption of Our Lady, St. Matthias, and St. Bernard. The massive brass candlesticks, of old Flemish design, are also well worthy of note. The architect of the building was Mr. Benedict Williamson ; builders, Messrs. Godson, of Kilburn. The mission is served from St. Anthony's, North Cheam, by the Rev. Bernard W. Kelly. This describes the original church in Brinkley Road; the present church was built ca. 1962 in Cheam Common Road.
