Friends of Surrey Cemeteries (Surrey Cemeteries: a survey, 2012):
Linden Grove, Peckham. Opened 1840 with 2 chapels and 2 lodges. One chapel remaining part restored. One lodge private. 52 acres. Southwark DC.
Originally owned by the London Cemetery Company, as was Highgate. Layout by surveyor James Bunning. Gothic Anglican chapel designed by Thomas Little (also designed Paddington). When first superintendent died in 1865 it was found that he had defrauded the company of thousands of pounds. With difficulty it survived.
Census of London burials in Aug 1889 showed 65,600 here. During the rebuilding of the Bank of England in 1933 some 800 skeletons and coffins were found over a 4½ month period and later reburied here Talk of a crematorium in 1911.
In 1960 purchased by a property company with intent to build on part of the land. Locals hostile to plan. Non conformist chapel demolished by 1970. In 1975 Southwark B C purchased the cemetery. Planned to divide it between 22 acre cemetery, 21 acre nature reserve and 9 acre park. Visited many times.
Ancestry now has burial records for 1840-1869 on its site. Active Friends Group with over 800 members. Lottery grant has been used to renovate chapel, one lodge, the main drive and a number of major memorials.
Unless otherwise stated the dates for the creation of parishes are taken from Youngs, Frederick. A. Guide to the Administrative Units of England; Royal Historical Society: London, 1979 volume 1 Southern England.
