Historical notes on English Catholic missions, Kelly, Bernard W. (Rev), 1907:
This mission originated in 1847, when Fr. Robert Hodgson hired an old coach-house and said Mass there for the benefit of the poor Catholics of the place. Such crowds flocked there on Sundays, that Fr. Hodgson had to rent from Guy's Hospital an old dissecting room in Webb Street, Borough. After clearing away "nearly two cartloads of human bones" and dislodging legions of rats, Fr. Hodgson turned the upper portion of the building into a chapel and the lower part into a school.

Bishop Wiseman attended the opening of this poor place of worship in 1848. Within three months, 4,000 persons went to Holy Communion. The mission being firmly established, Fr. Wenham and Fr. McMullen were appointed to carry on the work. The first mention of the mission in the "Catholic Directory" appears in 1858, when the resident clergy were the Rev. F. Lawrence and the Rev. S. McDaniel. The humble chapel, which could barely accommodate one-fifth of the congregation, was replaced by the present Gothic church, opened May 2, 1861. [...]

There is no graveyard at the Church of Our Lady of La Sallette and St. Joseph. We know of only three Roman Catholic cemeteries in the London area, St. Mary's in Kensal Green, St. Patrick's in Leytonstone, and St. Mary Magdalene in Mortlake.

Many local cemeteries may have Roman Catholic sections see https://www.southwark.gov.uk/births-deaths-marriage-civil-partnership-and-citizenship/deaths-funerals-and-cremations/cemeteries-and-crematorium

The area is variously known as "Borough" or "Bermondsey".
