Official opening 4 Jan 1938 – booklet. 35 acres to the north of Stoughton Road were purchased in March 1930 for £7,500 from the Trustees of the Rev Samuel Paynter – enough for circa 35,000 plots. 12 acres were laid out as the new cemetery with the remaining area let as allotments to 278 holders until needed in the future. SHC 5340/2/15 burial fees and regulations 1952. Coffins > 3ft below surface, 6ins soil between coffins. Vault coffins to be sealed with 6ins of cement or 2ins stone within 24hrs of burial. Prices – common grave stillborn 5/-. <10yrs old 10/- others 15/-. Ashes 5/-. Single graves 5ft 6ins deep. Exclusive rights stillborn £1. <10yrs £2. others £4. Plots 6by3 and also 9by4. SHC STK/5/1-5 burial register 1813-1895: name, town (mainly Stoke), date of burial, age, priest. SHC STK/5/6 burial register 1911-1939 Visited 2005 - Chapel and lodge in old section. Lodge now private residence. Chapel has stained glass and a rose window. Some burials continuing in this area. CWGC section with cross of sacrifice facing graves across path. Few old graves of note. Many mature trees – conifers and yew – but no flower beds. Pottery grave numbers by ~Ambrose Wade(?) & Co, Stafford Pottery, South Stockton. Also some metal numbers. New area has male and female toilets and a works building. Very municipal but well kept. Sign saying areas will be surveyed for dangerous memorials. Jewish plot ‘T’ 7 Jul 1974 near the road. A number of over the top graves – angles, prancing horses etc – families Darkie, Brazil -. Children’s area also has over the top graves. Council website states that they have a rolling programme of memorial testing – 35kg pressure stated with justification being cemetery children deaths and health and safety legislation. West Surrey Family History Society CD8 The Guildford Collection has baptismal records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1840, marriages from 1662 to 1837 and burials from 1662 to 1865. WSFHS CD10 (The Surrey Burial Index - 2nd edition 2009) has burial records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1865. WSFHS CD30 (Ancient Parishes in the Guildford District) has baptismal records for Stoke-next-Guildford St. John the Evangelist from 1662 to 1840 and burials from 1662 to 1865.
