The Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index has details of three war graves from World War 2. The church was built in 1912 and 1913, the first burial was September 1915.

It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England of Effingham Our Lady of Sorrows in in the Anglican Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Effingham St. Lawrence.
