of Croydon Common St. James. St James' parish was itself created from part of the Ancient Parishan Ancient Parish is a Church of England parish which, until the 19th century, had both ecclesiastical and civil functions of Croydon St. John the Baptist.

It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England St Michael and All Angels and Croydon Common St. James were merged into the new United Parishan united parish is the merger of two or more Church of England parishes to form a single new parish of Croydon St. Michael and All Angels with St. James Ther is no graveyard at St. Michaels church. However there are some 538 names in the Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index for Croydon Common St. James dating from 1816 to 1882. There are also 2,423 from the churchyard at Croydon St John the Baptist dating from 1390. Both sets of inscriptions were collected ca. 1883 and published in "Croydon in the Past".

WSFHS CD15(Surrey Baptisms Not in the IGI) has baptismal records for Croydon St. John the Baptist from 1538 to 1720, 1765 to 1799 and 1859 to 1876. The Southwark Diocesan Record Office for churches and parishes in the modern administrative county of Surrey, and those London Boroughs that were in Surrey until 1965, is the Surrey History Centre. This is where you should find any surviving parish registers, St. Michael and All Angels Church is in the London Borough of Croydon.
