Anerley originally developed on Penge Common [see Wikipedia article in the links below] in the ancient hamlet of Penge. Penge was a detached ChapelryA Chapel of Ease within an Anglican Parish, or a chapel in an outlying area of the parish that is more convenient for parishioners to attend of Battersea and was thus in the historic county of Surrey.
"Until 1878 the nearest mission was at Norwood. On October 25 of that year an iron church was opened in the Genoa Road. Canon A. Bethell, who purchased the church site, also erected the presbytery. He resigned in 1891, and shortly afterwards the temporary place of worship had to be given up. The present edifice of brick, opened May 14, 1898, consists of two stories, the upper being used as a chapel and the lower one as a school. The estimated Catholic population in 1900 was about 450."
Historical notes on English Catholic missions, Kelly, Bernard W. (Rev), 1907:

The present church was built alongside the old church ca. 1925-27 to a design by by F. A. Walters.

The church of the Holy Child & St. Anthony of Padua is in the (Anglican) ecclesiastical parishan ecclesiastical parish is an administrative area within the Church of England or Roman Catholic church. It is distinct from the civil parish, a local government unit in England of Anerley: Christ Church and St Paul.

There is no graveyard at the church of Holy Child & St. Anthony of Padua.

We know of only three Roman Catholic cemeteries in the London area, St. Mary's in Kensal Green, St. Patrick's in Leytonstone, and St. Mary Magdalene in Mortlake.

Many local cemeteries may have Roman Catholic sections see https://www.bromley.gov.uk/deaths-funerals-cremations/bromleys-cemeteries-crematoria

Anerley is in the London Borough of Bromley.

Unless otherwise stated the dates for the creation of parishes are taken from Youngs, Frederick. A., jr.. Guide to the Administrative Units of England; Royal Historical Society: London, 1979 volume 1 Southern England.

The Bromley Index will show you all the churches and cemeteries we know of in the former of Penge and now in the London Borough of Bromley. If we have missed any or you are looking for a church or graveyard that might no longer exist do please let us know using the email at the bottom of this page
