The cemetery is in the ecclesiastical parish of Farnham St Andrew. The Surrey Monumental Inscriptions Index has around has around 1017 names for Farnham St Andrew ranging from the mid 1700s to the 1930s. Green Lane Cemetery is in the Wrecclesham locality of Farnham. See the WSFHS sales page for more information (opens in a new page). Friends of Surrey Cemeteries (Surrey Cemeteries: a survey, 2012): Opened 1856. 15.8 acres. 2 joined chapels. Old lodge at original gates plus lodge at far end new entrance. Transferred from Waverley Borough Council to Farnham Town Council 2006. Burial Board formed 1853. Considered 3 plots of land. Initially accepted land at Willey Mill from Charles Knight but the total cost including 2 chapels came to nearly £3,500 and the Vestry would only sanction £3000. In May 1855 Vestry suggested an alternative piece of land from Knight but negotiations were unsuccessful so the West Street land was finally purchased from Thomas Pearce – cost of £1200 plus £125 to buy out Mr Mathers the tenant. The chapels and lodge were built by Goddards of East Street. Joint Burial Committee 1895. Farnham Council 27 July 1926. Richard Wooderson was appointed Sexton on £10 p/a – moved into lodge 1 May 1856 – 1st burial 3 May . 80-90 burials a year in first decade. 1931 newspaper report says 4 men employed here. SHC 7093/1/1/44 burial register 1856-1883 hard copy giving name, description, age, place of death (town), burial date, minister, burial plot, grave number, consecrated unconsecrated, from which parish if out of town. SHC 6049/3/box 16. Home Office sanctioned R C burial area 15 July 1926. Correspondence with CWGC in 1970s regarding upkeep of 55 graves @ 7/-6d p/a and 7 official headstones @ 2/-6d p/a. In 1947 area of 16.2 acres of which cemetery 9.6a. 1947 report says common graves singly at 6ft reused after about 14 years. Visited 2005. Well kept municipal cemetery. Lodge occupied but chapels shuttered. Reasonable planting of trees and shrubs – quite a lot of nice Yews. Memorials fairly average. Extension separated from original ground by a brick wall. Southern area slopes down to flood plain and seems soggy. In 2009 council encouraged the formation of a Friends of Farnham Cemeteries group with minimal success. Farnham is a (civil) parisha Civil Parish is the bottom most tier of local government in England Sometimes called Town Councils in urban areas [NB Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different systems of local government] in the Waverley district of Surrey.
