Opened 1926. chapel, area ca. 20 acres. Busy, designed on a grandiose scale but money ran out before work completed. Pleasant brick gothic chapel designed by R Hampton Clusas. Planting originally lavish but maintenance now limited. Ordinary memorials and now lawn cemetery policy introduced. Mortlake Crematorium built on north side in 1939. A dour brick and tile building (described as Hacienda Deco) designed by F Douglas Barton opened by Lord Horder. 2850 cremations in 1954. Visited in 2011 and found current burial areas taped off. Memorials generally in lines on either wood chips or weed killed strips of grass – very unsightly. Sign saying no more wood chips please! Well laid out with “meadows left to grow” in areas with older memorials and kerbing. Generally neat. At southern point an area that look like guinea graves but dated 1960s to 1980s some with no inscriptions. East lodge on main road very attractive red brick, possibly now sold. West lodge smaller but similar style. Small building behind west lodge looks like old mortuary. Funny little brick chapel in centre. Style reminiscent of 1930s shopping arcades in suburban London. Area of plaques for ashes behind chapel. Mature trees, Yews Eucalypts and natives with avenues of Chestnuts. Metal spikes with burial numbers in some areas. Lots of plastic flowers, memorials back to back. CWGC cross, memorial wall and rose bed – 31 burials 74 cremations “Their glory shall not be blotted out”. Crematorium in fenced/hedged off area, also redbrick. Rather bare surroundings. WSFHS CD10(The Surrey Burial Index - 2nd edition 2009) has burial records for Kew St. Anne from 1714 to 1840 and from 1845 to 1865. WSFHS CD15(Surrey Baptisms Not in the IGI) has baptismal records for Kew St. Anne from 1714 to 1790 and from 1845 to 1876. See our sales page for more information (opens in a new page).
