Friends of Surrey Cemeteries (Surrey Cemeteries: a survey, 2012):
Set back on western side of High Street with the New & Old areas either side of footpath. Chobham & West End Joint Burial Committee. “Victorian Cemetery” now closed. Circa 1-2 acres. No buildings. New cemetery circa 1-2 acres opened 1960s no buildings. Lawn cemetery rules.
Visited in 2008 - Old cemetery appears to be mid Victorian but when application to close it was lodged it was found to have never officially opened!
Mature hedging and trees to all boundaries including redwoods. Poorly maintained and access to many graves difficult even in winter. A grant to the local scouts has been re-instigated for ongoing maintenance. The perimeter is not secure and letters have been sent to the press (Feb 2009) complaining about dog fouling.
New area opened in the 1960s.
Small car park at end of access track opposite St Lawrence Church. Average memorials. Some laying down and banding of memorials – locals unhappy at this.
Chobham Museum at Benham’s Corner (Saturday/Sunday 11.30-3.30) has been given the Funeral Book of A J Coleman and Son 1916-1973. Originally decorators.
