Friends of Surrey Cemeteries (Surrey Cemeteries: a survey, 2012):
Opened 1926. Area of 60 acres including Honor Oak Crematorium.
Land acquired Jun 1901 – 24 acres for £11,305 (centre) plus 32 acres adjoining One Tree Hill Park for £19,469 (west). Nov 1901 – 12 acres adjoining Brockley footpath for £6325 – laid out as cemetery in 1926 – 1st burial 23 May 1927.
An area set aside for Salvation Army burials. Twin chapels by Aston Webb and Sons in neo-gothic style. Headstones rather ordinary however. Honor Oak Crematorium built on 10 acres of this land opened 29 Mar 1939 by Lord Horder. Designed by Maurice Webb, son of Aston, and William Bell, Borough Architect. Italianate style in brick, descending catafalque, cloister with over 6,000 tablets. 8 acres laid out as allotments and still in such use. Records at the cemetery and can be searched – charge of £11. New free standing columbarium. Many memorial seats in garden.
Visited in 2011 - allotments at southern end plus a modern “dislocated plot” with many black marble memorials, and sports field to east of main cemetery separated by railings.
Chapel and toilets, many visitors and flowers on graves. Old offices at either side of western entrance, northern one seemed to be in current use. Notice re making safe of unstable monuments or, if not possible, then laying them down. Also notice seeking people to join a Friends group.
Very full of graves, some paths being buried in. Chapels with "porte-cochere", locked up. Neglected rose walk behind civilian war death list (WWII) for those buried in unmarked graves.
Many native trees, copper beaches and chestnuts. Memorials back to back. WWII war memorial. Nicest section is the Salvation Army plot at north end – low granite walls, large cross on stone mound plus solid headstones. Crematorium very smart building, Egyptian columns, with nice stained glass window and seating for circa 60 mourners. Rock garden at side with waterfall. White marble fee-standing walls with black marble plaques rather loud. Tabby crematorium cat very friendly.
